You’ll find Secret (Kauapea) Beach, or “Secrets” as the locals call it, just past the Kilauea Lighthouse. To get there from Lihue on Kuhio Hwy, take a right onto Kalihiwai Road one mile after crossing the Kilauea Stream at mile marker 23. There are two Kalihiwai Roads, this one on the east side of Kalihiwai Bay, and another on the west.
So if you’re headed back from Princeville make sure to take the one on the east of the bay. Once on Kalihiwai Road you’ll immediately find a dirt road on the right. Follow that dirt road through beautiful Kauai countryside until you reach the end. The trailhead to the beach is on the left of the cul-de-sac between two rock walls. There is a short but difficult path downhill but the venture is well rewarded. Secret Beach is a large stretch of golden sand dotted with ironwood trees and backed by magnificent sheer cliffs.
It offers some of the most beautiful ocean and mountain views on Kauai, perfect for your photo album. Along the beach there is a small waterfall and some tide-pools for you to discover. It has a reputation for privacy, so if you wander too far along the beach, you may find some areas where clothing is (unofficially) optional.
