Close to the Na Pali Coast, about 5 miles west of Hanalei Bay, located just east of Haena Beach Park is a section of beach called “Tunnels Beach”. Technically it is part of the same sandy beach as Haena Beach, but it provides even more incredible ocean scenery. Makua (Tunnels) Beach is a two-mile stretch from Haena Beach Park all the way to Wainiha Beach Park. It is an area made popular by Hollywood movies.
Film makers love to use Kauai’s north shore in many of their block buster movies, such as the movie “South Pacific”. Surfers like to name Makua (Tunnels) Beach because of its surf-break, but it’s more aptly named for its incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities in the summertime.
Makua (Tunnels) Beach is great for both beginner and advanced snorkeling because it is a protected lagoon teeming with sea life on the inside, while offering even more exciting conditions on the outer reefs in waters up to 70 feet deep. If it’s windy you might see kite-surfers doing their thing. There is a lifeguard station located at Makua (Tunnels) Beach but it is closer to Haena Beach Park.
