Sandy Beach or “Sandy’s”, is located just over 2 miles from the Hanauma Bay Natural Preserve Park, at the base of Koko Head crater. It is the most famous body boarding spot on Oahu, except perhaps Waimea Bay. Sandy Beach is one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii and has fully earned its nickname “break neck” beach!
Swimming at Sandy Beach is not recommended unless you are an expert swimmer, and even then you must be familiar with these types of ocean conditions. Body boarders and bodysurfers love this spot due to its raging shore break. The waves break so close and so big on the shore you’ll feel like you are in the tube. This is the best opportunity for an action photo. But always keep your eyes on the waves and keep your distance. Ocean waves at Sandy Beach are very unpredictable. Again, experienced only.
The eastern portion of the beach has a reef that creates better waves for surfing. You’ll notice Sandy’s from Kulanianaole Hwy as you're driving along the cliffs. You can already feel the excitement when you see this small strip of golden sand against the turquoise, blue water. Do not swim here unless you are expert swimmer; the waves will pound you. There are lifeguards.
